NI SoS hopes Irish Government will support Troubles Truth Recovery Body

Northern Ireland’s Secretary of State says he hopes the Irish government, and others, will support a new Troubles Truth Recovery Body – now that the UK government’s Legacy Bill has become law.

The controversial bill was given Royal Assent yesterday.

Despite widespread opposition, the bill has now been put into law.

It contains provisions for immunity from prosecutions to those accused of killings during The Troubles and will also stop any new Troubles-era court cases and inquests from being held.

In a statement this morning, the Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris says now that the legislation has become law, the UK government will do all it can to support the Truth Body, and that he hopes the Irish government and others will do the same.

The Irish government is currently seeking advice on a potential legal challenge, while the new law is already facing several challenges from victims’ families.
