Over 4,500 people were admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital without a bed this year.
According to latest figures from the INMO, of the 4,571 people without a bed, 1,785 patients had to wait in the Emergency Department while 2,786 were waiting on a bed in wards elsewhere in the hospital.
The INMO says safe staffing underpinned by legislation is “urgently required in order to protect patients.”
101,240 people across the country were without a bed at hospitals so far in 2023.
The INMO says it’s “shocking that the necessary measures have not been taken by the HSE and individual hospital groups to alleviate this level of overcrowding.”
