There were more than 100 direct physical assaults on prison officers last year, one involving a female officer who was left with life changing injuries.
Figures from the Prison Officers Association show an increase of 137% in assaults in the space of three years.
The POA is calling on the Government to provide incapacitant spray, concealed batons and conflict resolution dogs, so officers could take more decisive action.
