Irish Farmers could lose thousands as Government refuses to reinstate €12m scheme

Farmers stand to lose out on thousands of euro if the Government refuses to reinstate a €12 million scheme.

Under the Straw Scheme farmers get paid to chop straw and re-incorporate it into the soil in order to increase organic carbon levels.

The scheme was scrapped last week by the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue without any warning.
