Flynn and Chambers clash in Seanad over Hate Crimes Bill changes

There were exchanges in the Seanad this week between Donegal based Senator Eileen Flynn and House :Leader Senator Lisa Chambers over the government’s Hate Crimes Bill, with Senator Flynn hitting out at Minister Helen McEntee’s decision to remove the Hate Speech element of the bill, which was causing difficulties during the Bill’s journey through the Seanad.

Senator Flynn told the Dail that as a member of the Travelling Community, she and members of other minorities did not feel heard, and regard the dilution of the legislation as a retrograde step.

Senator Chambers stressed that the other elements of the bill are going ahead, and emphasised that the purpose of the legislation is to protect everybody…….
