A new initiative with the aim of improving accessibility and inclusion has been launched across the Donegal Library Service.
13 large Communication Boards have been installed county-wide alongside A4 take-home versions.
This initiative has been designed to help non-verbal communication and early language development to support communication with library staff and users.
The Communication Boards have been funded by the Local Community Development Committee and has been delivered in partnership with Finding Charlie’s Voice.
The project aims to ensure that children, young people, and adults with communication support needs – including those who are non-verbal, autistic, or experiencing speech and language difficulties – can fully engage in library life, participate in events, and access services with greater independence and confidence.
The Communication Boards feature simple visuals and symbols, with text in both English and Irish, allowing users to express needs, ask questions, and interact with staff without relying solely on verbal communication
Speaking about the boards, County Librarian Maureen Kerr said, “This project forms part of Donegal Libraries’ ongoing commitment to creating welcoming, supportive community spaces that empower people to learn, connect, and thrive”.
