New homes built on floodplains will no longer be protected

New homes built on floodplains will no longer be protected by the government.

Junior Minister for the OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran has issued a warning to local authorities that building on land prone to flooding will no longer be tolerated.

According to the Irish Times, he says there’s an onus on the state to provide flood defences for existing buildings, but warns he “won’t protect” anyone who builds on floodplains in future.

Minister Moran visited Elm Park in Buncrana at the weekend, where homeowners are dealing with defective concrete blocks.

Residents there have made clear they do not want to rebuild on the floodplain of the Crana River, after previous flooding left homes inundated and one woman narrowly escaping drowning.
