2025 saw 16 dog deaths at Lifford Stadium

New data has revealed that 16 dogs died during or immediately after races at Lifford Stadium during 2025.

This data was obtained by People Before Profit TD, Paul Murphy in a Parliamentary Question to Agriculture Minister, Martin Heydon.

15 of the 16 dogs were euthanised by a vet at the track, with the 16th dog dying in a racing fatality.

Nationally, 197 dogs died at dog tracks last year.

In a statement released to Highland Radio News, Rásaíocht Con Éireann/Greyhound Racing Ireland said, “6,374 greyhounds raced in Lifford Stadium between 1st January 2025 and 31st December 2025 with 99.58% of the starters being uninjured during their races. All injured dogs are attended to by a veterinary surgeon at the track. Depending on the injury, euthanasia by the track veterinarian is sometimes the most humane option.

Throughout 2025 Rásaíocht Con Éireann conducted mainly unannounced welfare inspections on greyhound premises, as part of the industry’s efforts to ensure high welfare standards. 96.28% of all inspections were found to be fully compliant; a further 2.8% were satisfactory with advisory recommendations and 0.9% required the intervention of an officer where a direction to carry out our improvements was given.”
