Domestic abuse call up 51% in Donegal

Domestic abuse callouts to Gardaí in Donegal have risen sharply over the past year.

Figures released to Aontú through a Parliamentary Question show that An Garda Síochána responded to 2,032 domestic abuse-related calls this year.

That represents a 51% increase on the 1,344 calls recorded previously.

Meanwhile, the government is being urged to set up an advisory council led by survivors of gender-based violence.

The National Observatory on Violence Against Women will release a report today, calling for greater engagement to improve policy.

It says, at the moment, engagement happens in an ad hoc way through survivors sharing personal experiences, which can be very traumatising.
