Dr James McDaid says he resigned his seat in the Dail in order to expedite a general election.
The former minister resigned this morning – in a letter to the Taoiseach Brian Cowen last week, Dr McDaid called for an election before the budget.
His decision now leaves four vacant Dail seats and further undermines the Government’s majority.
