Derry City cruised to a deserved win at home to Longford Town on Friday night at the Brandywell.
A penalty five minutes from the break put them ahead after an attempted cross from Barry McNamee was blocked by the hands of Kevin O’Connor. The resultant kick was converted by Aaron McEneff.
On the stroke of halftime, O’Connor got a second yellow card after he had fouled McEneff on the halfway line.
Lukas Schubert came on as a substitute for Nathan Boyle on 61 minutes and he scored the second goal a minute later.
He controlled the ball well in the box under pressure from a defender before guiding the ball home from 12 yards out.
Rory Patterson missed a penalty in the 71st minute when he hit the kick over the Longford bar. The kick was given after a foul on Schubert.
Patterson nearly hit a spectacular goal on 74 minutes. He juggled the ball on the 18 yard line and lobbed his shot at goal. The keeper palmed the ball away but only into the path of McNamee who steered the ball in with ease.
Rory Patterson finally found the net on 83 minutes when he turned a defender in the box to make space to stab the ball home.
