FAI Intermediate Cup result: Letterkenny Rovers 0 v 1 Cockhill Celtic
Visitors Cockhill Celtic took an early lead when Letterkenny Rovers’ goalie Rory Kelly was beaten at his near post when Derek Doherty’s shot took a wicked deflection in the sixth minute.
The play was end-to-end, with Letterkenny’s Darren McElwaine coming close to equalising 20 minutes later against Ulster Senior League Champions Cockhill.
The pitch needed a late inspection before the match was given the go-ahead but the players ignored the wet conditions to put on a thrilling display in the opening stages.
The game at Leckview in Letterkenny had already been postponed from last weekend due to the playing surface.
At half-time, it was Cockhill who led 1-0.
Cockhill came close to doubling their advantage several times in the second half, but one goal was enough to win the tie in the end.
They now advance to Round 2 of the cup.
