Raw sewage an issue at 11 locations in Donegal – EPA

Raw sewage is still being pumped into Ireland’s waterways.
A new EPA environmental report claims ‘significant funding’ is needed to treat waste water if we’re to avoid pollution and health risks.
Nationally, untreated sewage is being dumped into the sea and rivers at 43 locations, with 11 of those locations in Donegal, that’s 25% of the total.
The areas identified by the EPA in Donegal are Killybegs, Bundoran, Ramelton, Rathmullan, St Johnston, Kerrykeel, Falcarragh, Burtonport, Kilcar, Moville and the Coolatee Housing Scheme.
The report suggests the problems are due to a lack of investment in infrastructure which has dropped by 40 percent, in the last decade.
It also found the building of treatment plants in many areas have been delayed by up to two years.
The agency says significant funding is required for waste water treatment if pollution and health risks to be avoided.
In total, 18 priority areas requiring action were identified in Donegal, the second highest total in the country after County Cork.
