Two investigations are underway into alleged fraud at the Donegal Education Centre in Donegal Town.
The Donegal Democrat is reporting today that all schools in the county have been informed about the investigations, which began when the centre’s current director noticed financial irregularities shortly after taking over the post last year.
The alleged fraud is believed to have occurred in recent years.
Letters have been sent to all primary and secondary schools this week informing them of the investigation, with the Centre’s Director, Jacqui O’Reilly Dillon saying the centre’s management committee wanted to be sure the schools heard it from them rather than in any other way.
Ms O’Reily Dillon took up the management position in June of last year, and the alleged irregularities came to light shortly after she began familiarising herself with the finances for the centre.
She told the Donegal Democrat that gardai and the Department of Education were immediately informed, and both have initiated investigations.
Today’s Democrat says it is possible that the amount of money allegedly misappropriated from the Education Centre in Donegal Town may run into hundreds of thousands of euro, but Ms O’Reilly Dillon has declined to comment on the possible figure involved.
The Department of Education has confirmed it is aware of a garda investigation, and would make no further comment.
The Donegal Education Centre in Donegal Town provides professional development training for teachers, and Ms O’Reilly Dillon says they are striving to continue with their daily work of supporting schools.
