Good Friday Agreement must be protected – McHugh

 

Government Chief Whip Minister Joe McHugh has emphasised the importance of protecting the Good Friday Agreement and the gains and benefits of the peace process, including the open border, as Brexit negotiations continue.
Minister McHugh says communities in the border region want the protection of the movement of people and goods after the UK leaves the European Union.
Minister Joe McHugh says the Irish Government has worked intensively over the past year to ensure the free movement of people and goods on the island of Ireland is maintained and protected post-Brexit.
The Government Chief Whip says “Our present and our future cannot be defined by Brexit but by our own peace agreement which provides for the totality of relationships across these islands.
An agreement on the border issue has yet to be agreed with the DUP calling for Northern Ireland to receive the same treatment as the rest of the UK.
However, Minister McHugh wants to re-emphasise his commitment and the commitment of the Government to continue to build the peace and to maintain and strengthen the relationships inside Northern Ireland, between North and South and between Ireland and Britain.
