Today is Haemochromatosis Awareness Day.
This genetic disorder is most common in Europeans – particularly in those of Nordic or Celtic origin.
It causes the body to absorb too much iron from their diet which then gradually accumulates in the liver, pancreas, joint or heart and if it’s not removed it can cause irreversible damage.
Anyone feeling excessive tiredness, lack of energy, joint pain, abdominal pain and loss of sex drive should ask their GP to for a blood test to check their iron levels.
A special information stand will be set up in the foyer of Letterkenny General Hospital today for anyone who wants to know more.
