Cash withdrawals fall across Ireland but Donegal holds steady

Across Ireland, cash withdrawals fell in 2025, but Donegal was an exception, with withdrawal values remaining steady.

A new report by the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland indicates that mobile contactless payments are now overtaking cards for many users.

Last year, €30 billion was spent via contactless payments, with the average person making 298 transactions.

More than half of these were on a mobile device.

Nationwide, ATM withdrawals dropped by 7%, but Gillian Byrne, Head of Payments at BPFI, says cash is still very much in use:
