Donegal County Council has agreed to draft a letter, to be signed by the Chief Executive, Director of Housing and all councillors, urging Housing Minister James Brown to reverse his decision to reject funding for modular homes in Donegal during the remediation of social housing.
Cllr Brian Carr said that, given the scale of the Defective Concrete Blocks crisis and the ongoing housing shortage, modular homes are essential to support families relocating during remediation works.
He also stressed that new-build homes should not be used as temporary accommodation, as they are urgently needed by those on the social housing list.
Speaking to Highland Radio News ahead of the meeting, Cllr Carr added that the request should be supported by data from the Council and the Defective Concrete Blocks Committee:
The motion was seconded by Cllr Gerry McMonagle, who said the council needs to be more than just letter writers. He urged the executive to “bang on the door” of the Department of Housing.
Cllr McMonagle said the Defective Concrete Blocks crisis has moved beyond writing letters, and that the council as a whole needs to show a united front.
