Almost 2,000 students who applied for special education schools in September still require a place.
There have been over 7,800 applications for the positions, although only 3,000 were initially budgeted for, according to the Irish Examiner.
Additional funding was approved this week for the Department of Education, after it was facing a dramatic overspend.
It’s expected some of this will go toward new special classes and school places.
