An Independent Senator is calling for the free travel scheme to be extended across the border into Northern Ireland.
Senator Sharon Keogan has urged Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary to examine the introduction of a seamless all-island scheme, saying separate arrangements currently exist for older people, people with disabilities and carers on either side of the border.
While older people can apply for a senior pass to travel into Northern Ireland, Senator Keogan says the current system is a “bureaucratic hoop” rather than a genuine all-island approach, and excludes other groups.
She says cross-border travel is particularly important for people in the North West:
