Donegal County Council officials are to be questioned about what strategy the authority has to deal with the issue of horses being abandoned on public roads in the county.
Cllr Dessie Larkin has tabled a question on the issue for Monday’s meeting of council, saying there is a worrying increase in the number of horses bought during the boom years now being abandoned because their owners cannot care for them anymore.
He’s asking how many animals are involved each year.
In some instances, he says, the horses end up on land, and the owners of that land assume responsibility for them.
More often, gardai bring the horses to the council to be dealt with……….
