Ireland’s World Cup hopes are over after a cruel semi-final defeat to England in Paris.
After going into the game full of confidence, Philip Doyle’s side slumped to a heavy 40 points to 7 defeat against a rampant English side.
Ireland actually took the lead with the opening try of the game in the 18th minute, which was eventually credited to scrum-half Tania Rosser.
But England recovered to dominate the rest of the game with tries from Michelle Clark, Kat Merchant, Kay Wilson and two from Marley Packer helped them to book their place in Sunday’s final against either France or Canada.
Ireland will now face the loser of that semi-final to decide third place.
Donegal girls Nora Stapleton and Larissa Muldoon along with the rest of the Irish squad have the chance to finish what has been a wonderfully successful tournament on a high.
