An Garda Siochana is considering the use of drones.
The Irish Times reports that Garda Headquarters is thinking of buying a number of the unmanned remote aircraft.
They could be used for surveillance, including tracking suspect vehicles into rural areas, as well as monitoring areas where drugs, fuel, or contraband are stored.
However, civil rights groups would be likely to raise concerns over privacy.
Donegal Deputy Padraig McLaughlin says although he doesn’t disagree with the use of drones, a balance of checks and reports would be necessary to uphold privacy:
