Residents in the Cockhill area of Buncrana are stepping up their campaign for a pedestrian bridge ahead of a Road Safety seminar in the town next month.
Spokesperson John O’Keefe says the community does not have faith in Donegal County Council’s plan to use temporary traffic lights to restrict traffic on Cockhill Bridge to one lane and construct a footpath on the inside of the bridge.
He says the lights would cost over 80,000 euro, while the pedestrian bridge should not cost more than 150,000 euro.
On today’s Shaun Doherty Show, he said the council seems fixated on holding out for a new 3 million euro road bridge, despite supporting a pedestrian bridge up to eight years ago…………..
Buncrana Councillor Nicholas Crossan is the current Leas Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council.
While he has concerns about the traffic lights, he says his information is a pedestrian bridge would cost more than the campaigners are suggesting.
He believes holding out for a new road bridge is the right thing to do………
