Letterkenny Rugby Club have been stripped of the Gordan West Cup they won recently at Ravenhill. In the final they overcame Larne in an exciting game by 20-18 after extra time. After the game Larne submitted a protest under the “Front Row Rule”. This was upheld late last week and Larne have been awarded the cup on a technicality. The Front Row Rule states that each team must have front row cover made up of one hooker and two props. Letterkenny did have a replacement hooker but no cover for the props were included on the subs bench. When Rae Clarke left the field there was no replacement for him which meant the scrums became uncontested during extra time. Letterkenny have been told by the powers of Ulster Rugby to hand back the cup and it brings a disappointing end to what was a double winning season for the club.
Highland Radio’s Rugby Correspondent Alec Mc Donald gave his reaction on the story to Myles Gallagher on Sunday Sport.
