Planned legislation on septic tanks will be discussed at a series of public meetings this week.
Up to half a million rural dwellers could be affected if the government decides to introduce mandatory inspections for septic tanks.
It’s reported that registration fees of up to 300 euro for each household could be imposed when the legislation is put forward this autumn.
Northwest MEP Marian Harkin says other countries have shown that there is no need for septic tank charges – which she thinks would just be a cash-cow for local authorities:
