Two men claim to have caught first salmon of New Year, one in Donegal

Two claims have been made to who caught the first salmon of 2012.
A man Dublin man claimed to have caught the first salmon in the River Liffey yesterday morning, while a Tyrone man claims to have made the first catch at the Drowse Salmon Fishery between Kinlough and Bundoran.
Declan Briggs claims to have caught the first salmon of the New Year in the River Liffey at a quarter past ten yesterday morning.
Mr Briggs, from Liffey Park in Lucan says he hooked an eight pound wild Atlantic spring salmon at Islandbridge.
He says he then released it unharmed to continue its journey upriver.
But, 47-year-old Ian Martin also claims to have made the first catch of the year in the River Drowse in County Leitrim yesterday morning.
Ian Martin also hooked the first salmon in the River Drowse in 2011.
He caught the 8 lbs salmon just 30 metres from where he hooked last year’s 11lbs 7 oz fish at the Drowse Salmon Fishery between Kinlough and Bundoran yesterday morning.
Mr Martin, of Tullyroan, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone has fished the Drowse every New Year’s Day for the past 21 years.
