A public consultation on the future of Lifford Hospital will begin on March the 1st.
While the closure of the residential care aspect of the hospital is proposed by the HSE as part of the consultation process, it is understood that counter proposals to keep the facility open and improve its viability will be considered.
Lifford currently has 11 long term beds and a number of step down beds which assist in relieving pressure on Letterkenny General Hospital.
Junior Minister Dinny McGinley says that while Lifford Hospital may close, that decision has not yet been made:
It is also expected that the Rock Hospital in Ballyshannon will be merged into the Sheil Hospital in the same town.
