The Finance Minister says homeowners who dodged the 100-euro household charge will have to pay it – when the property tax is introduced next year.
Michael Noonan says the Revenue Commissioners will have new powers to take the property tax, and any unpaid household charge from wages, social welfare payments and farm grants.
Fianna Fáil says the powers being given to revenue are draconian and will lead to unspecified amounts being taken from social welfare payments.
But Minister Noonan says the government intends to collect arrears from people who failed to pay the household charge:
