A major reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy which aims to cut fishing to sustainable stock levels and end dumping fish discards at sea was approved by the European Parliament in Strasbourg today.
Overfishing is widely seen as the worst failure of the current CFP which dates back to 2002.
The new CFP – when it’s finally agreed – will take effect in 2014 but there is still more work to be done to reach an agreement on it, particularly in terms of measures which should benefit the industry in Donegal.
