The SDLP says new allegations about the aftermath and investigation of the Omagh bomb serve to strengthen the need for a realistic and practical inquiry.
Yesterday was the 15 anniversary of the Omagh bomb – twenty-nine people died and over 200 people were injured when a car bomb planted by the Real IRA exploded.
It has emerged that the last detective to investigate the Omagh bomb has claimed vital evidence may have been held back from the original police investigation for fear of endangering the IRA ceasefire.
He says Downing Street was warned by Sinn Féin that arresting suspects in south Armagh would destabilise the ceasefire and that a decision was taken not to release intelligence that could lead to arrests.
