Judge describes drugs as a ‘scourge on our society’

derrycourtA Crown Court judge has said that all drug dealers had to be ‘discouraged’ as drugs were a ‘scourge on our society.’
Judge Philip Babbington made his comments in jailing a Derry man for possessing drugs with intent to supply.
26-year-old Sean Javod Kelly of 17, Moyglass Place in Strathfoyle admitted possessing class A and class B drugs with intent to supply on July 25 2012.
In passing sentence Judge Babbington said that the drugs had been found in the kitchen of a house that was being searched.
He said some of the drugs were in a bag and some in a bowl.
Kelly made admissions to possessing the drugs but initially denied intending to supply although he later admitted this in court.
The judge said that a check of his mobile phone records led to the intent to supply charge.
The judge said it was ‘quite clear’ Kelly had been dealing drugs and added that his pre-sentence report was ‘mildly encouraging’.
Kelly was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
