Councillor says rates structure is archaic and must be reformed

Donegal County Council is to provide more support for rate payers, with the new Local Enterprise Offices in each electoral offering advice and help.
During a lengthy discussion on the challenges facing small businesses this week, the council was told that when a new business starts up, very quickly Revenue and the council are in the door looking for taxes and rates at a time when support and encouragement should be the priority.
Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher said it’s vital that every support possible is offered, but added there must be change at a national level as well.
She says in these days of online business and e-commerce, some of the most profitable businesses are tiny, and having a rates structure based on floor space is archaic…………..
