A weekend cancer conference in Donegal has been told that building work on the new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry is set to begin next month, with the unit on track for a mid 2016 opening.
The Unit’s Manager Una Cardin told the Relay for Life conference that the design teams have been working with medical teams in Letterkenny and Galway to ensure that the best possible use is made of the resource.
The conference was told that some patients with specific conditions will need specialist treatment in Dublin or Galway, but its envisaged that 90% of Donegal patients requiring radiotherapy will go to Derry once it opens.
