Independent Councillor Padraig Doherty has confirmed he is rejoining Fine Gael.
The Glenties Electoral Area representative was previously a member of the party, and was elected to the council in 1999. However, he was not nominated by the party to run in the 2009 local election, and chose to contest it as an independent.
Now, after spending five years as an independent, Cllr Doherty has confirmed to Highland Radio News that he will rejoin Fine Gael.
Cllr Terence Slowey and Udaras board member John Curran have already been selected by the party in Glenties, and we understand one more person in the Gweedore area will be added by party HQ in Dublin
Today, it emerged that Cllr Doherty is one of two people being considered, and he says if he is not chosen, he will step down and not contest the election.
He says he’s enjoyed his time as an independent, but he believes the time is right to return to party politics………….
