Europe lead 5-3 after Day 1

imageTeam Europe have taken a 5-3 lead after the opening day of the 2015 Ryder Cup.
The USA led by 2 and a half to Europe’s 1 and a half after the opening fourball matches this morning.
But the home side came charging back, winning three of the afternoon’s foursomes and clinching a vital half-point in the other to take a 2-point lead into the weekend.
The biggest boost for European captain Paul McGinley would have been the half-point won by Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy as they battled-back from 2 down with 2 holes to play to claim a vital half.
Meanwhile, both captains have named their pairings for tomorrow’s fourballs.
Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson will continue their strong partnership against Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar in the lead-off match.
Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson will face Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan.
Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer will play the rookie pairing of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.
And Rory McIlroy will team-up with Ian Poulter to take-on Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.
