In a statement last night, the government confirmed the office of the Minister for Health is facilitating a meeting today between two local action groups, the HSE, Department officials, the Saolta Hospital Group, and all local Oireachtas representatives.
The statement makes no reference the perceived threat to the breast cancer service in Letterkenny, and claims made this week by Consultant Breast Surgeon Michael Sugrue that he is being prevented from doing his job in a way which he believes is intended to force his resignation.
The statement says the goal of today’s meeting is to find a long-term solution for cancer services in Letterkenny, noting that the Saolta Hospital Group has committed to continue the cancer service in Letterkenny on numerous occasions. It concludes Minister Varadkar is keen to supplement this further by providing access to additional services at Altnagelvin.
