As two one teacher schools in Donegal face an uncertain future, Donegal North East Deputy Charlie Mc Conalogue says this is the legacy of a government which has seen the number of one teacher schools quadruple.
He was speaking after it emerged in yesterday’s Sunday Business Post that Doaghbeg National School in Fanad and Leabgarrow National School on Aranmore Island are each within eight kilometres of another school, and therefore are being urged to consider local merges by the Department of Education.
Deputy Mc Conalogue agrees that the situation is not sustainable, but rather than backing schools into a corner, he says the government should restore supports, and start a genuine conversation……….
