Update – Derry PSNI appeal for information about Gobnascale pipe bomb

A bomb has been found in Derry overnight.
The viable explosive device was recovered during a security alert in the Gelvin Gardens area of the city at about five o’clock last evening.
A number of residents were evacuated while security forces examined the scene – and the device was made safe a short time later.
A forensic examination will now be carried out and the PSNI is appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
Foyle MLA Gerard Diver says this is totally unacceptable…………..

PSNI Statement issued this morning –
A viable device was recovered during a security alert in the Gelvin Gardens area of Derry/Londonderry last night.
A number of residents were moved from their homes while police and ATO examined the device which was found at around 5pm.
Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said :”The device was made safe and has been seized for forensic examination.
Detectives from Strand Road Reactive and Organised Crime are now investigating this incident and we would like to speak to witnesses or anyone with information.
We are especially keen to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious vehicles or people in the area at any time on Sunday 6th March.
