All Ireland League playoff result: City of Derry 10 v 21 Sunday’s Well
City of Derry’s promotion bid to take the step up from Division 2A finally collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
They faced Cork side Sunday’s Well in this promotion-relegation semi-final of the All Ireland League at Judges Road in Derry and lost.
Sunday’s Well missed a penalty early in the game but they recovered and at half-time led 18 – 03.
They opened the second period with a penalty to extend their lead to 21 – 03, but a try and conversion from Neil Burns helped Derry claw it back to 21 – 10.
However, it didn’t get any better than that for Derry and Sunday’s Well ran out the winners.
City of Derry started the season fantastically with an unbeaten run of six straight victories, but they then lost five successive games to jeopardise their promotion bid.
They got a reprieve on the last day of the regulation season when their home victory over Bective looked set to be enough to wrap up the Division 2A title.
But Highfield went on to the win the title and secure the automatic promotion spot, leaving Derry to slug it out in the playoff scrap with Sunday’s Well of Division 2B.
Alex McDonald was there for Saturday Sport and spoke with Highland Radio’s head of sport Oisin Kelly…
