Donegal Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has failed to secure the position Leas Cheann Comhairle today following a two hour election process.
He was defeated by 83 votes to 52.
There were four candidates in contention for the position in the Dáil today with Sinn Féins Sean Crowe defeated by 106 votes to 33, Independent Mattie McGrath 20 votes to 117 against while Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan lost by 83 votes to 52.
The vote will be adjourned until next week.
