European’s end early for Griffin & Pena in Amsterdam

Donegal’s Karl Griffin and Tori Pena bowed out of the European Athletic Championships in Holland this morning.
Griffin finished 8th in his heat of the 800m at the Amsterdam Stadium.
His time of 1 minute 49.37 was a season best for the UCD man but it wasn’t good enough to reach the next round as the top three from each heat and the four fastest losers qualified.
Pena failed to progress from round one of the Pole Vault.
The American based Finn Valley athlete cleared 4.35m early in the round but couldn’t pass the 4.45m mark that would have secured a place in her first major tournament final.
Pena will now turn her focus to next month’s Olympic Games in Rio.
