Agriculture and Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue has rejected a claim from Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle that the government has effectively given up on the Irish fishing industry.
Deputy Pringle was speaking Minister McConalogue asked the cabinet to approve a €66 million decommissioning scheme for the whitefish sector, as part of a suite of measures to combat the effect of Brexit on quotas.
Deputy Pringle says Minister McConalogue would serve the industry better if he fought for more quota.
Minister McConalogue says he is doing that, suggesting it is somewhat ironic that Deputy Pringle is taking this position, given that he supported Brexit.
