Gardai warn of bogus callers targeting elderly people

Gardai in Donegal are warning of a money scam targeting elderly people’s homes.

Investigations are continuing across the country into recent incidents where bogus callers are posing as Gardai and calling at the home of older people.

Gardai in Donegal are appealing to people to keep an eye on neighbours, particularly the elderly and vulnerable during the darker evenings and to report all suspicious activity and note relevant vehicle details if possible.

People are asked to be vigilant, to not open your door to anyone before you have confirmed who they are and what they want and to check identification, where appropriate.

Gardai are advising homeowners to keep front and back door locked, ensure windows are closed and secured, and that the exterior of a property is well lit as a deterrent. They say it will also allow neighbours a better view of your property.

Further advice includes; using a door viewer and chain/limiter, investing in CCTV or a panic alarm and to not keep large amounts of cash in your home while keeping all credit and debit cards in a secure location, including bank and other financial books and statements etc.
