Donegal was recorded to herd the largest amount of sheep in Ireland last year.
That’s according to the Sheep and Goat census published by Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Overall, the greatest number of sheep throughout Ireland was kept in Donegal with a population of 541,063.
Of this 368,223 were breeding ewes and over 11,600 were breeding rams.
A total of 6,209 flocks were accounted for with an average of 87 sheep in each.
Mayo was in second place with 1,229 less flocks than that of Donegal and an average of 93 sheep per flock.
Donegal also accounted for the highest number of Mountain cross sheep kept in the country with a total of 112,859, making up 11% of the national total.
Galway led the number of lowland sheep, representing 14% of the national total.
