Ours To Protect – Food Waste & Christmas Dinner 29/12/23

Highland Radio are delighted to partner with Coimisiún na Meán in launching a new series dealing with various topics on sustainability.

Donna-Marie Doherty of Highland Radio will have a weekly feature on Tuesdays at 12:30 covering a real mix of different topics and interviews with businesses and experts who have a common interest on expertise in sustainability.

Coimisiún na Meán stated; ‘”Ours to Protect”, is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference.’

This week Donna-Marie spoke with TV Chef Kwanghi Chan and Project Officer with DLDC Joanne Butler about preparing Christmas dinner, food waste and the Donegal Food Response Network.

Did you know?

  1. 1.8 million kilos of food is expected to be thrown out at Christmas (Too Good To Go).
  2. The Food Waste Charter has guides for businesses to lower levels.
  3. The Irish Independent reports that the cost of groceries for Christmas Dinner has increased by  3.2% this year – don’t let it end up in the bin!
  4.  900g of turkey per person will leave you with enough for two servings per person and left overs!

Why it’s important!

  1. 750,000 tonnes of food is wasted in Ireland every year (EPA).
  2. The Donegal Food Response Network prevents food from going to waste by  diverting to those who need a helping hand.
  3. You can save money and good food from going into bins from local businesses on apps like Too Good To Go.
