Council commits to provide civic burial groups after Letterkenny mayor says most graveyards are at full capacity

Donegal County Council says it is continuing to engage with local stakeholders in Letterkenny regarding the potential provision of a civic cemetery, with a view towards developing a model that can then be used elsewhere in the county.

The issue was raised by Letterkenny Milford Mayor Cllr Kevin Bradley, who told a recent meeting most graveyards in the district are at full capacity.

Responding to Cllr Bradley, officials said in 2020, Donegal County Council undertook a significant survey of graveyard provision and capacity in the county. The survey examined the status of all graveyards within the functional area of Donegal County Council.

The said the council is actively considering the provision of a new burial ground, and is working with a number of stakeholders, including The Inter-Church Group on Community Graveyard Provision in Donegal, the Black and Ethnic Minority Group, the Intercultural Platform and other Non-Denominational Groups.

They said this engagement has allowed the Council to gain a wider understanding of the requirements for multi-denominational burial arrangements in Donegal, and the Environment Section will engage with the newly elected council on the provision of burial grounds.

The initial focus will be on areas of greatest need, particularly the greater Letterkenny area, which has the largest population and the greatest cultural diversity.
