Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative has written to Donegal County Council and Councillors to highlight what they say is a lack of basic services in the town.
The letter, signed by the group and local businesses, calls for the road sweeper service in the town to be reinstated on a five-day-a-week basis.
Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative says they were left seriously aggrieved and let down after noting that despite being cleaned, not one piece of litter was removed from the footpaths along the town’s Main Street on Monday of last week.
The group says they believe it is not solely their job to keep Buncrana clean.
They say the least the town deserves is that the road sweeper be restored to its previous schedule of 5 days per week.
Given that Buncrana is the second largest town in Donegal with many visitors, the group says clean streets are essential for the community’s health, livelihoods, safety, and appearance.
Letter in full:
To Donegal County Council and Councillors,
We, the undersigned, business owners and Buncrana Tidy Towns, urge you reinstate the road sweeper service for five days a week.
Buncrana is the second largest town in the county, and the largest town in the peninsula with a population of just under 8,000 people, and growing. We also get a number of visitors on a daily basis due to our coastal location and access to numerous beauty spots and historical sites. Clean streets are essential for our community’s health, livelihoods, safety and appearance. The road sweeper plays a vital role in maintaining our towns tidiness and appeal. We have submitted our application to the tidy towns competition, in the hope of securing our 10th gold medal. We are currently the tidiest town in Donegal, for the past 3 years, we are only 4 points behind the national winner.
Just this week past, over one of the busiest periods in the year Buncrana Main Street was cleaned once, on Monday morning. Upon inspection of the main street at 7.50am we deduced that that it would have been as well not to be swept given the state it was in. Not one piece of litter had been removed from the footpath on either side of the street. Our members felt seriously aggrieved and let down by this sight. We feel that it is not solely our job to keep Buncrana clean.
We request that the road sweeper be restored to its previous schedule, its original and proper frequency, of 5 days per week, providing regular cleaning and maintenance of roads and streets. This is the least Buncrana deserves.
Let’s work together to keep our community clean and beautiful!
Signed : Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative
