Man (70s) dead after getting into difficulty while swimming near Bundoran over weekend

A man in his 70s has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in South Donegal at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the ‘Diving Boards’ area near Bundoran on Saturday afternoon, where a man was rescued from the water.

He was taken to Sligo University Hospital in a critical condition and has since passed away.

It’s understood he was a Donegal native, who worked as a musician in London.

Bundoran RNLI have released the details of the rescue mission.

The crew was tasked at 4.42 to a casualty on the rocks and launched with four volunteers.

There was a rough sea with a swell of approximately 3 meters, resulting in poor visibility.

The crew says they could see a lifeguard jumping into the water to the casualty and that they went straight in and recovered the casualty and both lifeguards, bringing them back to the pier.

The national ambulance service was there to take the man to Sligo University Hospital.

The Gardaí later confirmed that the casualty had passed away.
