Brown bins to be introduced across ten more areas in Donegal

Brown Bins are to be introduced into ten more areas of Donegal from July as the implementation of the 2012 Household Food Waste Regulations continues.
This means that food waste will not be put with general waste, but instead put into a brown bin and collected separetely.
As of Wednesday of this week, householders in Ballyshannon, Ballybofey-Stranorlar, Buncrana, Bunbeg-Derrybeg, Bundoran, Carndonagh, Donegal Town and Lifford will be obliged to separate food waste.
The measure was introduced on a pilot basis in Letterkenny a year ago, with householders obliged to segregate food waste and place it into a specific brown bin for collection, rather than mixing it with general residual waste destined for disposal at landfills.
From July 2016 the regulations will apply to a further 19 towns and villages.
Donegal County Council says it is a condition of the Waste Collectors’ Permits to provide this service, and it has been engaging with the Collectors to ensure their compliance.
All food waste, including meats and dairy products will go into the new bin.
